Two years after the release of the highly successful D80, Nikon announces the Nikon D90 body, with new features that sets it above its predecessor. This 12.3 megapixel camera belongs to the company’s line of DSLR models, positioned comfortably between the entry level and more professional DSLR cameras. Among its most notable upgrades include an easier Live View mode, improved image quality and the new HD video-recording capabilities.

The new CMOS sensor produces higher quality images and excellent output performance up to ISO 3200, comparable to the D90’s higher counterparts, particularly the D300. The Nikon D90 body also features an enhanced contrast-detect autofocus, self-cleaning sensors, face detection, and 3D tracking with 11 autofocus points. The new scene detection system includes different modes like portrait, close-up, landscape, night portrait and sports. The D90 is the first DSLR camera to record 1280 x 720p, HD quality videos with mono sound at 24 frames per second, and with HDMI output. It even includes in-camera retouching such as lens distortion corrections, adjusting vignetting and straightening horizons.

At first glance, the D90 strikes a strong resemblance to the D80, but upon closer inspection, there are several upgrades that certainly make the new purchase worth it. Besides a larger and better 3-inch LCD screen, other improvements on the D90 include 96% frame coverage on the viewfinder, wider ISO range expandable up to ISO 6400, faster continuous shooting at 4.5 fps, and a faster image processing engine.

With an improved user interface and ergonomic controls, the Nikon D90 is still as easy to use as its more entry level counterparts. The D90 usually comes with a Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, but the camera also works in compatible with a variety of lenses, from wide-angle to macro lenses. For those who want to venture beyond entry level DSLRs but aren’t quite prepared to buy or handle more advanced equipment, the Nikon D90 body is the ideal choice for anyone who wants to take their photography into another level.
